Wood & Washi
Window shades and space-zoning solutions in Washi and fine fabrics
For more than 1,300 years, Japanese craftspeople have made Washi by hand: a paper strong enough for sliding shoji screens and lanterns, and fine enough to turn daylight into a soft, even glow. Since 1998, Wood & Washi has brought Washi into contemporary European interiors as made-to-measure window shades and room dividers that soften light, warm a space and never look quite the same twice.
Washi does not block the light; it listens to it. Morning softens, midday glows, evening turns to amber, and moonlight rests on the paper like fresh snow. Alongside Washi, our collection of fine European fabrics, from airy sheers to full blackout, lets every room find exactly the light it needs. Every piece is made to order, for one window and one space alone.
Materials
Every Wood & Washi piece begins with its material. Washi brings the warmth and quiet texture of Japanese kōzo paper.
Woven Washi, spun from kōzo fibre and woven in Japan, adds a soft, textile depth. Textures is our collection of fine fabrics from leading European mills: decorative weaves, airy sheers and deep blackouts in a wide range of colours, all certified flame-retardant. Washi Unique is hand-crafted to order, each panel carrying a pattern that is never repeated. And the ribs, in anodised aluminium, plain or inlaid with natural wood veneer, give every screen its rhythm and weight.
Use them on their own or combine them: together, they let us shape the light in any room.
Eco-friendly technologies
Paper remains a natural material from start to finish
Our Washi is made from kōzo, the paper mulberry: a shrub cultivated in the Japanese countryside for more than a thousand years. Each autumn the young shoots are cut, steamed and stripped of their bark; the inner bark, with the longest and strongest fibres of all washi plants, is soaked in clear mountain water, cleaned by hand and gently beaten until the fibres float free. Formed on a screen and left to dry, these fibres become Washi: a paper that is both delicate and remarkably strong, with a softly lustrous surface. No harsh chemicals are used in the process, so the paper keeps its natural appearance; even in direct sunlight, it resists yellowing and fading. Nature provides the fibre; patient human hands turn it into light.
Solutions
From translucent Washi to fine fabrics and full blackout, our materials let you decide how much light enters a room, and how it feels when it does. Our five collections dress windows of every size and shape, from a single kitchen window to a double-height wall of glass, and divide open spaces without closing them off. Each is made to measure and can be combined with the others, so a whole home or office can share one material language.
